Following recent news from The Green Design Centre (GDC) at Waterfall Estate, managed by Decorex, it is definitely clear that winter is upon us and it’s time to gear up - get cosy and snug – and this without consuming unnecessary energy. The cold months are an important time for us to remain responsible to our micro and macro environments while keeping our families healthy.

We, at the GDC, are happy to have working product that is going to keep us warm over the next few icy months. There are a variety of exhibits at the centre that will address all your heating needs from both a design and efficiency view point. We have units that are innovative, stylish, elegant and at the forefront of heating technology.

We even have passive heating systems such as Thermguard, a 70% recycled newsprint insulation that is less dense than most and thus more cost effective – particularly now that new building regulations require ceiling insulation of over 100mm thick.

Century Gas and Florad underfloor heating systems

In line with the initiative for a green estate, Century Gas (in association with Sasol) has installed a pre-paid piped gas system to each property. This is a first of its kind and will allow homeowners to maintain an awareness and control of their consumption. As electrical under floor heating is not allowed in the estate, exhibitors such as Florad and Speedfit, through their hydraulic under floor heating systems, allow homeowners to take full advantage of the ‘on tap gas’ to warm up water pumped through polyethylene tubes in the floor. Century Gas has made it possible to have safe, green, efficient and cost effective under floor heating that heats up the room as well as the walls, and even solid first floors.

We have been impressed with our solar assisted air conditioning unit by Sinkoil. This neat little wall mounted unit has surprised us by cooling, and now heating the GDC. The system absorbs and stores heat and energy from as little as 4 - 5 hours of sunshine. Alternatively you can centrally heat your home with Advantage Air and their environmentally responsible company policies and leading energy saving design. Their system can be remotely controlled and has the ability to address each room’s needs individually (up to 32 zones). Even as a single system, sensors manage the air flow and monitor the temperature so that the whole family can be kept happy with different settings for different rooms.

Advantage Air and Calore fireplaces

Calore Fireplaces & Stoves - our latest exciting addition to the GDC has arrived just in time. Their truly innovative ‘multifire’ system has the capacity to distribute heat into the room and throughout the home through a centralised duct system. So yes there is one fire burning in the living room, but ‘think centralised heating’ where the whole home is kept at a constant temperature from floor to ceiling. Their stoves come in a myriad of colours and designs and they burn wood, gas, or a marvellous green product produced from the timber industry’s waste! The units fire up electronically and are remote controlled – so can be set to switch on and off when desired – clean burning Italian design and remarkable engineering now at the GDC.
